A Major Step Forward for Belgian Patients
We are pleased to share that radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been officially granted reimbursement status in Belgium. This milestone represents a significant breakthrough for patients suffering from Barrett’s oesophagus and early-stage oesophageal neoplasia, conditions that have historically required more invasive surgical interventions.
What is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that uses targeted thermal energy to destroy abnormal tissue in the oesophagus. It has been established as the gold standard treatment for Barrett’s oesophagus with dysplasia, offering:
- Complete eradication of dysplastic tissue in the majority of patients
- Significantly reduced risk of progression to oesophageal cancer
- Short procedure time with same-day discharge in most cases
- Excellent safety profile with minimal complications
Impact of Reimbursement
Prior to this decision, RFA was available in Belgium only in a limited number of centres and required significant out-of-pocket costs for patients. With reimbursement now in place, Belgian gastroenterologists and endoscopists can offer this treatment to a much broader patient population.
Prion Medical distributes the Starmed RFA system, a state-of-the-art platform with an extensive body of clinical evidence. Our team is available to provide demonstrations, training support, and clinical guidance for centres wishing to implement RFA.
Next Steps
If your centre is interested in establishing or expanding an RFA programme, we invite you to reach out to our clinical team. We offer on-site demonstrations, hands-on training, and ongoing 24/7 clinical support.
“This reimbursement decision is the result of years of evidence building and advocacy from the Belgian gastroenterology community. We are proud to support this milestone.”
